Frequently asked questions

What people ask before trying it

Ten questions, ten straight answers, including the ones where the answer is “not yet”.

What is Project Nat20?

A 3D roleplaying table, multiplayer and in the browser. The game master lays out maps, miniatures and scenery; the players move their characters and roll dice that everyone watches tumble. It is also called a virtual tabletop, or VTT in roleplaying circles.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Everything happens in a recent desktop browser, with no download and no plugin. A modest graphics card is enough: the table is 3D, but it stays light.

Is it free?

There is a free plan, with no bank card, and it is enough to create an adventure and play. Paid plans add seats, pages and resources; they are described on the Plans page. Payment goes through Stripe, which hosts the form: no card number ever reaches us.

Which game systems are supported?

All of them, and none in particular: no rules engine is built in. No imposed character sheet, no damage calculation. You play with your rules, your dice and your maps, which suits a published game as well as one of your own making.

Can I import my own miniatures?

Yes, in GLB format, plus Hero Forge's .unity3d export, which the server converts itself. The file stays private until you place it on the table. STL and multi-file glTF are not accepted.

How does fog of war work?

The game master lays down a zone (rectangle, disc or an outline traced by clicking), sets its opacity and colour, then chooses who can see through it. The server strips hidden objects before it answers: they never reach the players' browsers, so no amount of tinkering reveals them.

How many players fit at one table?

Three on the free plan, more above it. Everyone joins by a named invitation: there is no public link to paste in a chat room and forget about.

Is there an initiative order for combat?

Yes. The game master enters the initiatives, the order sorts itself, ties are broken with one click, and the miniature whose turn it is is circled by a glowing ring on the table. It comes with the paid plans, starting at Adventurer.

What happens to my data if I leave?

You take your data with you as JSON and delete your account from your profile, without writing to anyone. Deletion is immediate: it erases your personal data and the files you imported. The privacy policy has the detail.

Does it work on a phone?

Not yet for the 3D table: it needs a screen and a mouse. The management pages read fine on a phone, but you cannot play on one. Saying otherwise would cost you an evening finding out.
